Listening to same and recalling why I thought it was such a dud of a show. Definitely one of those shows where I had way more fun before and after the show then during the show. That said, for a dog of a show, I'll alawys fondly remember them going into Ripple. One of the handful of moments where my jaw hit the floor because I couldn't believe what I was hearing at first. Still one of the few bands that ever made me feel that way at a show - as if something truly special was happening merely because they dusted off a song in their own catalog.

Remember all the folks heading for the exits during "Saturday Night"?
that'll teach 'em to cut out early.

dud? well i havent listened, but... for the era, the SETLIST looks quite fine.....

of course that is one of the amazing TRICKS of the dead, the setlist never ends up mattering when it's good -- only when it's a clunker....

It's not a total clunker - Birdsong is interesting (even "metallic" at times) but most of the songs really never pack any oomph. It was one of those shows where you felt like you were, for lack of a better analogy, waiting for the shrooms to hit but all you got was that tired sort of queasy feeling w/o the payoff (not that I have any first hand knowledge of such things). But those first few notes of Ripple, even though not a particularly good version of the song, elicited a collective roar of disbelief.

It's funny BD. This has to go down as a historic show with an out of the blue breakout of a a GD classic. While the show overall is sub par I wonder why there are minimal mentions or reviews of this gig but the Philly show in 95 where Unbroken Chain is played gets tons of reviews and people go crazy for it. UC is a sub par song at best and the gig overall is pretty brutal. Different strokes for differnt folks I guess
